Grown out of one of the oldest settlements in the Americas, El Paso is a city with a fascinating history. It's also a place much loved by adventure sports fans, who go climbing, bouldering and abseiling in the spectacular surrounding land. Even if you're just passing through on your way to or from El Paso International Airport, it's well worth hiring a car so you can do some proper exploring. Hiring a car is easy to arrange before you go, meaning you can plan to make the most of your stay.
There's something going on in El Paso at all times of the year, but winter visitors are especially well served, with two major classical music festivals, a Christmas fair that people travel to from all over the country, and as the weather warms up again, an impressive Mardi Gras parade. In March, there's the family favourite, Kidspalooza, and in June, the city celebrates one of the more notorious events in its history, legendry outlaw Billy the Kid springing his friend from the old El Paso jail.
To experience older El Paso culture, it helps to get out of town. Just a 45-minute drive will take you to Hueco Tanks, where you can see ancient rock art and learn about the way people lived in this area thousands of years ago. Some visitors choose to stay on campsites nearby, and a night out under the stars in this beautiful region is something you won't forget in a hurry.
It might be a desert city, but a visit to the Botanical Gardens will show you that El Paso has a great deal of native wildlife. Driving in El Paso gives you the freedom to get out into the desert and perhaps spot a cottontail or one of the several striking local lizards in the wild. Birdwatchers are especially well served, with several species of hawk and magnificent golden eagles to be seen.
El Paso is also the usual starting point for visitors to Lincoln National Forest near Alamogordo, and Gila National Forest and Cibola National Forest to the northwest.
Whatever the reason for your visit, El Paso is a place where you can expect to have much fun and where you'll be surprised by how much there is to discover.
